Top storylines and athletes to watch (or rewatch)

Which events grab headlines depends on the day: sprint finals, marathon drama, gymnastics finals and team sports often dominate. African athletes had big roles across track, field, boxing and football — follow medal contenders from Kenya and Ethiopia in distance races, sprinters and jumpers from Nigeria and South Africa, and rising talents across the continent.

Look out for unexpected breakout performances. Minor favourites can become major stories overnight when they upset big names or set personal bests on the biggest stage. We cover both the established stars and the underdogs who make the Games exciting.

Practical tips: follow event schedules by session (morning/evening) to catch finals, set alerts on your phone for marquee events, and check athlete start lists the day before competition for last-minute changes. If you’re traveling to Paris, plan for crowds around main venues and use official transport resources.

On this tag you’ll find live result posts, match reports, athlete interviews and short explainers to help you understand rules or scoring in less familiar sports. We also highlight African angles — performance, preparation and what big moments mean back home.

Men to Compete in Artistic Swimming at Paris 2024 Olympics: Paving Way for Gender Equality

For the first time in Olympic history, men's artistic swimming will feature at the Paris 2024 Summer Games. Originally debuting in 1984 as a women-only event, artistic swimming has undergone several transformations including a name change in 2017. This historic inclusion is part of FINA's push to gender-equalize the sport and expand its global appeal. Men's solo and duet events will join existing competitions for women, taking place at Seine Musicale in Paris.
