Gender Equality — News, Cases and Practical Steps from Across Africa

Gender shapes headlines, courtrooms, workplaces and online spaces. This tag brings together reporting and analysis focused on how gender affects public life across Africa — from high-profile court cases to workplace disputes, cultural debates and online harms. You’ll find clear, practical coverage that explains what happened, who’s affected, and what it means for everyday people.

What you’ll find here

Hard news: we cover legal cases and institutional decisions that matter. For example, our reporting on Judge Selby Mbenenge’s tribunal examines claims of sexual harassment and the courtroom’s debate over consent and workplace power. Another story looks at the removal of security from Chief Justice Martha Koome and what that signal means for women in public office and judicial independence.

Voices and consequences: some stories dig into real lives behind headlines. The piece on OnlyFans creator Annie Knight explores the physical and mental risks tied to online sex work and how public stunts can prompt wider conversations about safety, consent and regulation. We connect those personal stories to bigger policy discussions so readers see both the individual and the system-level impact.

Policy and activism: you’ll also find updates on laws, investigations and public campaigns that affect gender equality. From workplace rights to protections against harassment, we track how government actions, court rulings and civil society pressure shape outcomes on the ground.

Men to Compete in Artistic Swimming at Paris 2024 Olympics: Paving Way for Gender Equality

For the first time in Olympic history, men's artistic swimming will feature at the Paris 2024 Summer Games. Originally debuting in 1984 as a women-only event, artistic swimming has undergone several transformations including a name change in 2017. This historic inclusion is part of FINA's push to gender-equalize the sport and expand its global appeal. Men's solo and duet events will join existing competitions for women, taking place at Seine Musicale in Paris.
